Don't Overlook Europe
I know things have changed hugely in recent years, but I think there is still an understandable trend for UK exporters to overlook some of the opportunities right on their doorsteps in the new Europe.
When I began my export career (admittedly many moons ago), we automatically targeted naturally sympathetic overseas markets – Malta, the Middle East, and Africa.
These were English-speaking markets which were historically receptive to UK exporters, with well-established networks of agents and distributors.
But, especially for our smaller exporters, we must be careful not to neglect the huge potential of the new Europe. Language is often no longer the problem it used to be. The EU delivers contractual and legal frameworks which are fairly accessible and these markets can be very cheap in terms of travel costs to get into.
So – work the world by all means, but do not overlook the business on our doorstep!
